Description & Progress

Background

The SMERU 20 Years Book will be published to commemorate the 20th anniversary of SMERU’s work in the research and policy influencing. This book will take the reader back to the history of the establishment of SMERU since 2000 and its contribution to evidence-based policy research results until 2020. To this end, several studies that have had the impact of policy will be highlighted. This book is intended to be a medium to share SMERU’s experience on influencing policies to build interest of youth on evidence-based research and to shape community of practices in this matter. Apart from presenting SMERU's contribution, this book is also a reflection of SMERU's achievements over the past 20 years and lessons learned. By presenting sufficiently complete information about SMERU, can attract new stakeholders to work with SMERU.

Objective

This book has the following three purposes:

  1. Describe the impact of SMERU's research on policy in Indonesia
  2. Present a reflection on SMERU's success and aspects that still need to be improved with the aim to build interest of youth on evidence-based research and to shape community of practices in this matter
  3. Present information about SMERU's work over the past 20 years for SMERU stakeholders and partners as well as stakeholders and potential partners

Upon completion of book writing, we aim to conduct book launching (sharing of SMERU Experience, 1 seminar) and 3 discussions forums (NGOs, think-tanks, young researchers).

The seminar will be held in Jakarta, in the first quarter of 2021. It is expected to be attended by 100 participants from targeted stakeholders ranging from government, development partners, research institutes, media, private sectors, and academics. The event will be held outside of SMERU office. There will be opening remarks by distinguished speaker, keynote speech, and at least 3 resource persons to talk about their stories on engaging with SMERU.

Beside the above main event, SMERU will also hold 3 discussion forums with NGOs, think-tanks, and young researchers) with the aim to share experience of SMERU in policy influencing. We would like to present a reflection on SMERU's success and aspects that still need to be improved. It is hoped that the lessons learned will be adopted by other NGOs and think-tanks striving for the same goal as SMERU, which is evidence-based policy influence. At the same time, the book is expected to build interest of youth on evidence-based research and to shape community of practices in this matter. The discussion forums will be held throughout the first semester of 2021. It is planned that the forums are of 25 participants and 2 speakers, held in Jakarta, outside of SMERU’s office.

Methodology

The book will have a foreword and begins with a brief article about SMERU's history. The book will be ended by a final chapter that draws a line from the impact of the policies discussed in the previous chapters and explains SMERU's steps forward.

After the book team conducted a staff survey that compiled the impact of SMERU's studies on policy over the past 20 years, eight studies were selected as the studies to highlight the book. This selection is based on the broad theme of the study and the impact of the policy.
