Description:

The internet has become a basic necessity, especially for people in big cities. An internet-based economy also brings new colors to global development, including in Indonesia. However, there are doubts about the contribution of the digital economy in the national economy. SMERU’s macro data analysis shows that although the growth of internet users has increased exponentially in recent years, it does not correlate with relatively stagnant economic growth. According to the 2020 Inclusive Internet Index released by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Indonesia faces a number of obstacles if it wants to fully exploit the potential of the digital economy for the national economy. These obstacles include internet quality, infrastructure, digital literacy, and government regulations.

SMERU has conducted a study on Inclusive Digital Economy during June 2019–March 2020. This policy study is aimed to provide research-based evidence that can be used in policy discourse on digital economy. At the end of April 2020, a webinar was held to virtually disseminate the findings of the study. In the webinar supported by Knowledge Sector Initiative (KSI), SMERU invited government officials, Internet service providing company, think tanks and academics as resource persons so that this event could serve as a discussion platform for various stakeholders to improve the digital economy ecosystem.
