SMERU Director as Speaker at IPG Talks Series "BTS Policymaking: The Role of Knowledge"
Director of SMERU Widjajanti Isdijoso was one of the speakers at the IPG Talks series themed "BTS Policymaking: The Role of Knowledge". This discussion was aimed at strengthening the discourse on issues related to evidence-based policymaking and efforts to strengthen the knowledge and innovation ecosystem in Indonesia, as well as opening insights for the public who are not familiar with this important issue.
The event discussed the role of knowledge behind policymaking. Given the current criticism of government policies, it is important to see the process behind their making.
Ibu Widjajanti mentioned that there are a number of factors that influence policymaking, i.e., political interests, the number of people benefiting from the policies, social costs, availability of resources, policymakers’ capabilities, and the capabilities of people giving policy recommendations.
She also talked briefly about the importance of paying attention to competing as well as quality evidence and, more importantly, of having rigorous evidence. The role of the government and other stakeholders are crucial in supporting research institutions in effort to improve the quality of research.
