Welcome to the first edition of SMERU's regular monthly newsletter. Why a newsletter? Because we believe that having information spread and discussed as widely as possible is a central part of creating the social conditions for addressing the social crisis. This newsletter hopes to not only distribute as widely as possible our qualitative and quantitative findings but also the views and findings of other individuals and groups, including some we may not agree with in the spirit of open discussion.

As the economic crisis continues, the capacity of many Indonesians to provide for the basic necessities of life - food, clothing, and shelter - has been thrown even further into doubt. A prominent theme of several of the articles in this issue of our newsletter is the daily struggle many people face to provide sufficient food for themselves and their families and the grave impact this situation is having on the welfare of certain sections of Indonesian society.

Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Households in Pekalongan City

Macro level data shows that Indonesia as well as Pekalongan City experienced an economic downturn due to the global financial crisis (GFC). Apart from this, however, there are also other local shocks which occurred in the city such as the closing of a factory due to internal mismanagement, batik’s competition shock, and the closing of the local fish trading place. These crises somehow affected the economic sector which later affected households that depend on them as sources of income.

CBMS-Based Vulnerability Mapping Guides: Local Government Responses to Climate Change

Results from the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS)–Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA) research initiative dubbed “Support for Local Governments for Environmental Management in Southeast Asia Project” highlight how vulnerability mapping can help improve local government responses to climate change.
