On 9 May 9 2019 the SMERU Research Institute and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia conducted an audience visit to Dr. Darmawan Prasodjo, Deputy I of Presidential Chief of Staff, at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP). The SMERU delegation was represented by two researchers from the EINRIP (Eastern Indonesia National Road Improvement Project) study team, Yudi Fajar M. Wahyu and Dinar Dwi Prasetyo, and the Institute secretary, Nuning Akhmadi. The objectives of this visit were (i) to present the results of the EINRIP Monitoring and Evaluation Program (2008-2018): Qualitative Social Research and (ii) to explore the possibility of replicating the Model of Change of Road Improvements and Economic Activity in the construction of national road infrastructure.
On this occasion, Dinar Dwi Prasetyo and Graham R. Gleave (DFAT consultant) explained the important findings of the study, namely the positive contribution of the EINRIP project to the improvement of the economic activities of the community which then leads to increased income and welfare of the community. All of this is illustrated in a model of change diagram that explains the flow of the impact of national road improvements on increasing community income. A full description of this can be read at http://bit.ly/smeru-einrip2018.
This model is can be replicated in the national road infrastructure development activities carried out during President Jokowi's administration. Dr. Darmawan Prasodjo was very impressed with the findings and recommendations of the study. He said that the government carried out massive infrastructure development and a lot of questions have been asked about the impact of the development. From Dinar’s and Graham’s presentations, Dr. Darmawan was convinced that the recommended model of change can provide answers to these questions. He also promised to look into the study report and hope to have further discussion with the EINRIP study team.
