The student grading system at the primary school level has undergone fundamental changes in the last five years. The diagnostic study team from The SMERU Research Institute, in collaboration with AIGHD and Mathematica Policy Research, conducted a study using an instrument that is an adaptation of the World Bank’s SABER. The data was collected using in-depth interviews with stakeholders at the central level, i.e., the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, during August–September 2017. The initial findings reveal that, despite various challenges, the changes in the grading system has the potential of improving accountability, which directly contributes to improvement in learning.
