Regional Development Forum: Toward More Inclusive Economic Development in South Sulawesi

The Regional Development Forum (FPD) is an event set out to facilitate policy dialogues and exchange of practical information and experiences between researchers, development actors, and other stakeholders. The event was a collaborative effort of The SMERU Research Institute (SMERU), the Government of South Sulawesi Province, and BaKTI. It was held on Tuesday, 8 May 2018, at Ruang Pola of the South Sulawesi Governor Office.

We chose South Sulawesi Province because of its relatively high and consistent economic growth in the last few years. Moreover, SMERU has conducted some research in several kabupaten (districts)/kota (cities) in South Sulawesi Province, including the Study on Urban Poverty in Kota Makassar (2012), Study on Urban Child Poverty and Inequality in Kota Makassar (2014), Qualitative Study on the Socioeconomic Impact of EINRIP National Road Repair in Kabupaten Bulukumba and Kabupaten Sinjai (2009 and 2016), Study on the Access of Poor Women to Public Services in Kabupaten Pangkajene dan Kepulauan (2014–2017), Qualitative Study on the Policies to Recude Inequality in Greater Makassar (2016), and Study on Factors that Support and Hamper the Development of Sustainable Livelihoods in Kabupaten Bantaeng (2016–2017).

Present at the event were, among others, Prof. Dr. Bambang P. S. Brodjonegoro (Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas), Richard Mathews (Australian Consulate-General in Makassar), and Dr. Since Erna Lamba (Chief of Economic Bureau of the South Sulawesi Government).
