The SMERU Research Institute (SMERU), in collaboration with the Government of Surakarta, held a workshop with the theme “The Role of Regional Governments in Improving the Welfare of the Poor”. The workshop was held on Tuesday, 29 March 2016, at Bale Tawang Arum, Surakarta Mayor’s Office. The objective of the workshop was to discuss efforts to deepen the integration of the policies issued by the central government, regional governments, and other development actors to improve the welfare of the poor. The workshop specifically highlighted challenges faced by development actors when they made efforts to eradicate poverty by looking into the dynamics of poverty in urban areas and child poverty. These two issues have become increasingly important in the long-term effort to reduce poverty and social inequality.
