Community-based management is an increasingly important form of governance and control of forests and other natural resources. In Indonesia, government policy aims to expand the role of communities in controlling and managing forests. Since the 1970s, many different forms of community forestry (CF) have been implemented in Indonesia but there has been little systematic analysis of these different approaches.

This edition of SMERU’s newsletter disseminates research results on youth and children while focusing on a topic relatively rarely discussed by the public. First, about youth’s role in development, which often has a nuance of mere jargon.

We begin this edition with the results of SMERU and LSP-WB‘s monitoring of the Village Fund (VF) and Village Fund Allocation (ADD) spending. Since 2015, SMERU carried out a three-year monitoring of ten villages in Sumatra, Java, and Nusa Tenggara. This is considered important because in 2016 the government disbursed 47 trilion rupiahs of VF, and two years later the figure rose almost 1.5-fold.

This study aims to identify the factors that have influenced differences in learning outcomes during the pandemic will strengthen policymaking using research-based evidence.
