Why must an exit strategy be considered? The lack of an exit strategy may result in inefficient use of resources and in the end may mean that the activity fails to empower its target group.

“Poverty trap” is a phrase often used in many studies on poverty. This phrase describes a structural condition that results in someone or a community becoming trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty that is difficult to break. Nevertheless, amidst the stories of those who remain trapped in poverty, we find various experiences of men and women who are able to free themselves from poverty.

The Specific Allocation Fund (DAK) is one of the mechanisms of transferring funds from the central to regional governments, aiming among other things, to increase the availability of physical facilities and infrastructure in the regions in accordance with national priorities as well as decrease the discrepancy in growth rates between regions and between service sectors.

Recently The SMERU Research Institute and its close associates were shocked by the sudden death of one of the Institute’s leading researchers, Wenefrida Widyanti. Her death was not only a great loss to the Institute, because she played a significant role in many of SMERU’s research projects, but also for the Indonesian research community at large.

Is it people themselves or the environment around them that predominantly determines their course of life? The answer to this question has long been debated by social scientists.
