Teacher is a noble profession. We all agree. However, some people think that teacher is an easy profession. In fact, in the journey to becoming a quality teacher, both teacher candidates and in-service teachers with years of experience have to face numerous obstacles.
We examine the relationship between schooling completed and mathematics learning from 2000 to 2014 by developing learning profiles for Indonesia. Using nearly-nationally representative survey data, we find a large gap between students’ ability and standards set by the national curriculum. Learning declined over 14 years, a loss of a fourth of a standard deviation.
Indonesia has instituted wide-ranging educational reforms over the past twenty years, but recent international assessments of student learning indicate that these reforms may not have translated into learning gains—the country is performing comparatively poorly and worse than its regional neighbours.
