Nawala SMERU June/XVIII/2024

Climate change poses a grave threat to Indonesia. We must support various efforts to preserve the environment while anticipating the impact of these efforts on the welfare of society, especially the poor and vulnerable who will feel the greatest impact. As a research institute focused on poverty and inequality, SMERU contributes by conducting research on these issues to provide insight for the government and relevant stakeholders in addressing these pressing concerns.

In June, SMERU hosted two webinars for the Forum Kajian Pembangunan, highlighting the importance of marine conservation area management in improving coastal community welfare and the crucial role of local governments in ensuring a just energy transition. The webinars featured speakers from policymakers in these fields and SMERU researchers who presented their study findings. Both webinars aimed to foster discussion and concrete action towards achieving sustainable and equitable development. If you missed the live discussions, you can watch the recordings via the links provided in this month's Nawala SMERU.

To further broaden your understanding of pressing issues, we suggest two publications grounded in SMERU studies. The first is a SMERU policy brief that recommends strengthening the social protection system for children impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The second is a journal article that examines the authority of local governments and its influence on education quality in Indonesia.

We also want to thank you for your continued support towards Nawala SMERU.
