Nawala SMERU No. 35: December 2025

Dear Readers,

We extend our deepest sympathy for the floods and landslides that struck several areas in Sumatra in late November. Our thoughts are with the affected communities, and we hope they are granted strength as recovery efforts move forward smoothly.

In this edition, I would like to recommend a reading from a SMERU study published nearly two decades ago, which offers a systematic review of key debates and issues in disaster studies. This literature review serves as an important reminder of the need for more coordinated disaster management that is oriented toward reducing community vulnerability.

In addition, SMERU is currently conducting a study to estimate the cost of caring for children with disabilities. The findings are expected to provide an evidence base for reforming the coverage and benefit levels of social protection programs, making them more responsive to the needs of children with disabilities and their families.

Over the past few years, we have also begun to expand our research on climate change, with a particular focus on the social impacts of an increasingly alarming climate crisis. To better understand the realities of this crisis and its impacts on vulnerable groups, we invite you to watch our video on the SMERU YouTube channel.

As the year draws to a close, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for your support and collaboration throughout 2025. We wish you a Happy New Year. May the year ahead bring renewed spirit to advance research-based policies that are more just and inclusive.

We always welcome your feedback. Please feel free to send your suggestions or questions to comms[at]smeru.or.id.
