The Consortium of Community for Education Advocacy in Indonesia (MPPI) was established in late 2023 as a part of the Policy Forum on Education (PFoE). MPPI was founded with the aim of promoting improvements in Indonesia’s education system through an evidence-based approach. Comprising 21 education-focused organizations, MPPI concentrates on early childhood education, foundational literacy and numeracy, leadership development, and scholarship provision.
One of MPPI’s key contributions in the PFoE was drafting the Education Policy Communiqué based on five major issues discussed by its members. These include early childhood development and education, primary education, leadership/higher education, digital transformation, and education policy. The communiqué was later submitted to the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the campaign teams of the 2024–2029 presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
The election of Indonesia’s new president and vice president brings leadership changes across various government institutions, both at the national and regional levels. This momentum presents an opportunity for MPPI to strengthen its role in driving transformation in the education sector.
In response, SMERU and the Tanoto Foundation have taken the initiative to revitalize MPPI to optimize its position as a strategic partner for the government. This initiative also reaffirms MPPI’s commitment to continuously adapting to various educational challenges—both nationally and regionally—and to strengthening cross-sector collaboration to ensure quality education access for every Indonesian child.
The goals of this project are as follows:
- Strengthen MPPI members’ commitment to continuing the consortium’s activities.
- Formulate the consortium’s objectives, joint work mechanism, and work plan until the end of 2025.
Identify key education issues to develop a joint pact, particularly for raising public awareness ahead of the regional elections (pilkada).
The MPPI revitalization project was carried out through a series of activities:
- Preparing and distributing a questionnaire to all MPPI members to gather their views on MPPI and the key education issues that should be prioritized.
- Conducting individual discussions with selected MPPI members as follow-ups to the questionnaire results.
- Drafting MPPI’s objectives, working mechanisms, and work programs for review and discussion with all MPPI members.
- Drafting proposed priority education issues to be discussed with all MPPI members.
- Finalizing and signing a joint commitment by all MPPI members.
Finalizing a joint communiqué to be utilized and disseminated by all MPPI members.
