Imagine Life without Domestic Workers, Could You Manage Work and Daily Comfort?

Policy Research

This infographic highlights the crucial role domestic workers (pekerja rumah tangga/PRT) play in supporting the economic and daily lives of their employers. These workers often lack recognition and protection for their labor and rights. The infographic emphasizes the importance of shifting public perceptions by recognizing domestic workers as actual workers, not merely as helpers.

It presents several key points. It illustrates the benefits households gain from employing domestic workers. By taking on responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and caregiving, domestic workers free up time and alleviate the care burden for both men and women, allowing working parents, particularly mothers, to focus on their careers.

Yet, despite their significant contributions, domestic workers’ rights are rarely acknowledged. Many are considered ”part of the family”, but work without clear or written contracts, perform a wide range of care duties, endure long hours without adequate breaks, and lack essential health and employment protections.

This infographic was based on the study "Investing in Care Workers: Positioning Domestic Care Workers in the Care Economy in Indonesia" supported by the Government of Canada in collaboration with Penabulu Foundation. The study contributes to the Care Connect: Action for Care Workers in Indonesia. The organizations partnering in this initiative are the SMERU Research Institute, Kalyanamitra, and the National Network for Domestic Workers Advocacy (JALA PRT).
