Every Worker Has Rights, That Includes the Domestic Worker in Your Home

Policy Research

This infographic highlights the importance of recognising and fulfilling the rights of domestic workers (pekerja rumah tangga/PRT) in Indonesia. It calls on the public to support collective advocacy for the ratification of the Bill on the Protection of Domestic Workers (Rancangan Undang-Undang Pelindungan Pekerja Rumah Tangga/RUU PPRT).

The infographic underscores that no law currently safeguards domestic workers, and it emphasizes the need to recognize PRT as workers. Ratifying the RUU PPRT would benefit both domestic workers and employers: domestic workers would be acknowledged as dignified workers, entitled to legal protection and fair wages, while employers would gain clarity through formal regulations and experience fewer labor disputes. Legal recognition is a crucial step toward ending discrimination and exploitation, fostering mutual respect and human dignity, and ensuring health and employment protections. In short, it means real protection for domestic workers.

This infographic draws from the study "Investing in Care Workers: Positioning Domestic Care Workers in the Care Economy in Indonesia", supported by the Government of Canada in collaboration with Penabulu Foundation. The study contributes to the Care Connect: Action for Care Workers in Indonesia. The organizations partnering in this initiative are the SMERU Research Institute, Kalyanamitra, and the National Network for Domestic Workers Advocacy (JALA PRT).
