Nawala SMERU No. 32: September 2025

Every 24 September, we celebrate National Farmers Day. In this edition, we revisit a 2010 article that analyzed the agricultural reform introduced 27 years ago. That policy shift profoundly affected farmers and reminds us that public decisions in favor of vulnerable groups can both protect and empower them.

We also share more recent reading and viewing recommendations. One article explores the effects of super apps—now widely used for services such as food delivery—on nutritional outcomes. Another, from Kompas, highlights the paradox of unemployment in Indonesia: while the open unemployment rate has declined, the number of unemployed has actually risen by more than 80,000. This article draws on findings from SMERU research. We further invite you to watch our video, Ask the Researcher, which sheds light on the realities of domestic workers in Indonesia and underscores the urgency of passing the Domestic Workers Protection Bill.

In addition, we invite you to join the Introduction to Impact Evaluation training organized by the SMERU Learning Centre on 8–9 October 2025. The training will guide you through developing a theory of change, designing indicators, and selecting appropriate evaluation methods.
