On 25 July 2018, The SMERU Research Institute organized a book launch and seminar titled “Employment and Re-Industrialization in Indonesia”. The book is written by Dr. Zulfan Tadjoeddin (Senior Lecturer, Western Sydney University) and Prof. Anis Chowdhury (Adjunct Professor, Dean's Unit School of Social Sciences & Psychology).

The SMERU Research Institute hosted the 9th Forum on Employment Policy (FKK) on 24 July 2018. Chaired by Mrs. Dra. Rahma Iryanti, M.T (Expert Staff of the Minister of National Development Planning for Social Affairs and Poverty Reduction) and under the topic of structural transformation, the forum presented two resource persons, Dr. Asep Suryahadi (Director of SMERU) and Dr. Zulfan Tadjoeddin (Senior Lecturer of Western Sydney University).

After successfully improving access to education in the early 1990s, with virtually universal primary school completion and similarly positive trends in senior secondary level, Indonesia began investing to improve learning outcomes since 2005. For almost a decade, the country has been spending about one-fifth of its public funds on education.
