This August marks the 79th anniversary of Indonesia's independence. While the world is grappling with issues like climate change, economic instability, and technological disruption, Indonesia is also presented with new opportunities. The theme “New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia” encourages us to look forward to a brighter future.

Jakarta has frequently been identified as one of the cities with the most severe air pollution problems. SMERU, in partnership with international experts, is conducting research on how Jakarta residents protect their families from the negative impacts of air pollution.

Climate change poses a grave threat to Indonesia. We must support various efforts to preserve the environment while anticipating the impact of these efforts on the welfare of society, especially the poor and vulnerable who will feel the greatest impact.

Improving the quality of basic education remains one of Indonesia’s most pressing agendas. SMERU recognizes the significance and is firmly committed to supporting these efforts. This includes conducting analysis of data from the National Assessment and the Indonesian Madrasah Competency Assessment.

The Indonesian government has set an ambitious poverty reduction target of 6.5-7.5 percent by 2024. Achieving this goal requires active participation from local governments (pemda) in developing Regional Poverty Reduction Plan (RPKD). We are backing this effort by helping local governments better analyze poverty-fighting policies through online training.
